BJ PENN VS. CLAY GUIDA ADDED TO UFC 237

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

One of the best fighters in MMA background is set to return to the Octagon later this spring. Additionally, the UFC’s return to Ottawa receives a couple of new matchups in today’s MMA odds and ends.
BJ Penn vs. Clay Guida, UFC 237
A lightweight link between BJ Penn and Clay Guida is slated for UFC 237, that is set for May 11 in Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. MMAFighting.com broke the information. Penn (16-13-2) is currently 12-12-1 all time from the Octagon and will be the former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion. But he’s fallen on hard times as of late. Now age 40, he had been only submitted by Ryan Hall through heel hook and is currently riding a six-fight win streak. He won’t hang up the glasses, believing he could hang in the UFC, but it is clear his very best times are years . Guida (34-18) is 14-2 all time in the UFC and most recently lost by submission to Charles Oliveira. However, he beat Joe Lauzon and Erik Koch in back-to-back fights before that. Now, you just can not pick Penn to beat anyone about the UFC roster, and I’d label Guida as a big favorite to win this fight despite his very own struggles. .
Nordine Taleb vs. Siyar Bahadurzada, UFC Fight Night 150
An intriguing welterweight bout between Nordine Taleb and Siyar Bahadurzada will happen at UFC Fight Night 150, set for May 4 in Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Taleb (14-6) is 6-4 at the UFC and is coming off of consecutive stoppage declines to Sean Strickland and Claudio Silva. Bahadurzada (24-7-1) is 3-3 at the UFC and many recently dropped a choice to Curtis Millender. Both guys are on the downsides of their careers, but I view Bahadurzada as the complete fighter and would prefer him to win this one.
Alexey Oleynik vs. Walt Harris, UFC Fight Night 150
Heavyweights Alexey Oleynik and Walt Harris are set to battle UFC Fight Night 150. Ariel Helwani broke the news. Oleynik (57-11, 1 NC) is 6-2 in the UFC and is coming off of a submission win over Mark Hunt. Though he’s 41, he is still fighting at an elite level. Harris (12-7) is 5-6 in the UFC and only picked up the biggest win of his career, a split decision nod over Andrei Arlovski. Though Oleynik is getting up there in age, he’s looked great as of late and has arguably the best entry game at the heavyweight division, period. Although Harris could cause Oleynik problems if this struggle stays standing, Oleynik’s advantage on the floor should make him a big betting popular in this particular bout.
Kyle Nelson vs. Matt Sayles, UFC Fight Night 150
Featherweights Kyle Nelson and Matt Sayles will also fulfill at UFC Fight Night 150. Nelson (12-2) lost to Carlos Diego Ferreira on short notice in his UFC debut, but that fight was up a weight class and he had been on a six-fight win streak on the regional arena prior to that. Sayles (7-2) chose to Sheymon Moraes in his UFC debut following a nice win on Dana White’s Contender Series made him a UFC bargain. This looks like a total coin-flip and I expect the line to be close a Pick’em.

NEW UFC BOUTS ANNOUNCED INCLUDING RETURN OF GREG HARDY

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The UFC continued their current series of fight announcements late into the week, and the newly-revealed bouts are recorded below in the MMA odds and ends.
Saparbek Safarov vs. Nick Negumereanu Due to an accident to Gokhan Saki, light heavyweight Saparbek Safarov will now take on Octagon newcomer Nick Negumereanu in UFC Fight Night 147, set for March 16 in The O2 Arena in London, England. Nolan King of FloCombat broke the information. Safarov (8-2) was completed by Gian Villante and Tyson Pedro in his initial two UFC fights and that he has not fought in over a year now. Negumereanu (9-0) is an undefeated 24-year-old prospect fighting from Romania who has finished all his pre-UFC competitions within the distance. Despite taking the fight on short notice and creating his Octagon introduction, I enjoy Negumereanu to win this fight. It’s a pure grin about the chinny Safarov, that I expect to get cut out of the UFC when he loses this fight. The chances are already out with this one, and really the UFC newcomer is a 2-to-1 preferred to get his hand raised.
UFC Fight Night 148 vs. Frankie Saenz, marlon Vera The UFC has re-booked the bantamweight bout between Marlon Vera and Frankie Saenz that was scrapped days ahead of UFC 235 for UFC Fight Night 148, which takes place March 23 in Bridgestone Arena in Nashville Tennessee. Vera (12-5-1) is 6-4 at the UFC and is coming off of back-to-back stoppage wins over Guido Cannetti and Wuliji Buren. Saenz (13-5) is 5-3 in the UFC and defeated Henry Briones and Merab Dvalishvili in his last two bouts by decision. I really don’t find the lineup changing much from where it closed before Saenz got hurt. Start looking for the line to be equal to what it finished it, with Vera as a close 2-to-1 favorite.
Poliana Botelho vs. Lauren Mueller, UFC 236
Because of an arm injury, Paige VanZant is out of her women’s flyweight bout against Poliana Botelho in UFC 236 and instead Lauren Mueller is taking the battle. The card has been set for April 13 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Botelho (7-2) is 2-1 in the UFC but dropped by entry to Cynthia Calvillo in her final fight. Mueller (5-1) is 1-1 in the UFC but has been filed by Yanan Wu in her last fight. It’s another battle involving two flawed fighters who could go either way, but based on title value I would anticipate Botelho to be preferred here.
Greg Hardy vs. Dmitry Smoliakov, UFC on ESPN 3
Controversial heavyweight Greg Hardy will return at UFC on ESPN 3 against Dmitry Smoliakov. The card is set for April 27 in BB&T Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Igor Lazorin broke the information. Hardy (3-1) lost by DQ to Allen Crowder in his UFC debut as a huge favored but’d won his three former pro MMA bouts by knockout. Smoliakov (9-2) has been finished in bout of his UFC appearances before bouncing back with a entry win on the Russian regional scene in January. However, at 36 years old he has no upside and the UFC is bringing him here to lose. I would not advocate putting the juice Hardy after what occurred in his UFC debut, but I fully expect him to be a monster favored yet again for this particular fight.

YOEL ROMERO VS. RONALDO “JACARE” SOUZA 2 HEADLINES UFC ON ESPN 3

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The UFC has booked a possible middleweight title eliminator for an upcoming spring card down south, and I’ll give my thoughts on this exciting new battle in the present MMA odds and ends.
Yoel Romero vs. Ronaldo”Jacare” Souza 2, UFC on ESPN 3
All of us thought the main event of UFC on ESPN 3 was likely to be a five-round middleweight fight between Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa. However, there’s been a change of plans. Based on ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Costa was scratched in the card and now Romero will rematch rival Ronaldo”Jacare” Souza at a rematch. UFC on ESPN 3 takes place April 27 at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, and Romero vs. Souza 2 is set as the newest five-round main event.
It was possibly slightly surprising to see the UFC book this rematch at the point of time, together with Romero coming from a split decision loss to Robert Whittaker in his last fight and Souza that a KO win over Chris Weidman, but looking at the state of the middleweight division more closely the fight makes sense. With Kelvin Gastelum combating Israel Adesanya at UFC 236 for the interim middleweight title, and the champ Whittaker sitting on the sidelines with injuries, the branch continues to move along and await no one. Both fighters needed a matchup to stay busy in one of the game’s most active divisions, and with no additional top-ranked contenders accessible to fight in April, this rematch between Romero and Souza was the best way to go for the UFC.
The first time Romero and Souza fought was back in UFC 194 in December 2015 (the same night Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo), together with Romero edging out a narrow split decision. Since then, Romero has gone 2-2 using a set of decision declines in the Octagon to Whittaker bookmarked by KO wins over Luke Rockhold and the aforementioned Weidman. Souza, meanwhile, has gone 4-2 since then with endings over Weidman, Derek Brunson, Vitor Belfort and Tim Boetsch and losses to Whittaker and Gastelum. Despite both Romero and Souza being 41 and 39, respectively, they remain on top of the middleweight division, and the winner of the bout should be near a title shot.
Romero (13-3) is 9-2 overall from the UFC and has emerged as one of the most devastating knockout artists in the sport today, and of course among their most accomplished wrestlers. Souza (26-6, 1 NC) is 8-3 at the UFC and is one of the most well-rounded fighters at the division, and of course among the best MMA fighters ever to have not fought for a UFC name.
As for the chances for this rematch, I’m anticipating something near a Pick Celtics using a little lean towards Romero just because he was already training with this particular card and because he won the first battle. Nevertheless, the fight was only 3 rounds, and these two rounds could prove to be the difference in the rematch now around. Irrespective of who gets their hands raised, it’s going to be a fight, however.

ALEXANDER GUSTAFSSON VS. ANTHONY SMITH HEADLINES UFC FIGHT NIGHT 152

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

Two of the top-ranked light heavyweight contenders in the world are set to square off at the spring, and here are my first thoughts on this pivotal matchup at 205lbs.
Alexander Gustafsson vs. Anthony Smith, UFC Fight Night 152
With both guys coming off of reductions to Jon Jones in their last individual outings, the UFC matchmakers have gone ahead and matched up Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith to the primary event of UFC Fight Night 152. The card takes place June 1 at Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, also this five-round headlining bout was first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.
At first glance, this is a fight that makes sense with both men needing to rebound after their losses to Jones. Gustafsson suffered a TKO defeat to Jones in the main event of UFC 232, while Smith dropped a lopsided decision to Jones at UFC 235. Together with the UFC having a principal event for its return to Sweden, it obviously made sense for Gustafsson to headline the card, and for Smith it has an opportunity to acquire another major event fight after decades of being a journeyman in the game.
At the exact same time, nevertheless, it is very surprising to see Smith get back in the cage soon and sign up a bout agreement not even two weeks after getting beat up real good by Jones at UFC 235. Smith did not mount much crime in that fight and bore the brunt about 25 minutes of Jones’ strikes, and afterwards said he wished to take some time off to rest and unwind after a busy schedule in 2018 and 2019. Certainly, though, the allure of becoming another main event slot against a top competition like Gustafsson was too much for Smith to pass on.
Gustafsson (18-5) is 10-5 overall in the UFC and prior to the reduction to Jones had won back conflicts over Glover Teixeira and Jan Blachowicz. Always a lady, Gustafsson has been one of the best contenders in 205lbs for much of this 2010s but hasn’t been in a position to win the title despite three fractures at it, two against Jones and one against Daniel Cormier. Smith (31-14) is 7-4 overall in the UFC but is 3-1 since moving up to light heavyweight, with wins over Mauricio”Shogun” Rua, Rashad Evans and Volkan Oezdemir winning him a shot Jones. He showed against Jones that he’s simply not on the champ’s degree, but he remains a very good contender at 205lbs.
In terms of the opening betting line for this fight, I believe the oddsmakers will place Gustafsson as the favorite here, though I doubt he opens over 2-to-1. Smith has revealed since moving up to light heavyweight he has more knockout power and durability in his new weight class, and that I wouldn’t totally count him from this struggle. However, Gustafsson is the more skilled fighter and will of course be fighting in his hometown that ought to give him an increase. Regardless of who wins, this should be a very exciting matchup between two of the greatest dogs in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

VALENTINA SHEVCHENKO VS. JESSICA EYE HEADLINES UFC 238

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The UFC has officially declared its forthcoming event in The Windy City. UFC 238 occurs June 8 at United Center in Chicago, Illinois, along with the first three bouts for the card have been shown, such as the women’s flyweight title fight. My thoughts about the new bouts — all women’s struggles — are under.
Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Eye, UFC 238 UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko will create her first title defense when she takes on Jessica Eye in UFC 238. Though not official, it’s probably this bout will function as the co-main occasion of this pay-per-view.
Shevchenko (16-3) is 5-2 in the UFC and won the vacant flyweight title with a five-round unanimous decision win over Joanna Jedrzejczyk in her final outing. She is 2-0 as a flyweight at the UFC, and her just two losses in the Octagon came from double champ Amanda Nunes. Eye (14-6, 1 NC) is currently 4-5, 1 NC total in the UFC and is 3-0 since moving to the flyweight division. However, her three wins at 125lbs were all very close decisions, also Shevchenko is a massive step up in competition from who Eye has been fighting.
Look for the champ Shevchenko to start as a monster favorite here as she looks to receive her first name defense under her belt and begin to build her legacy in the sport.
Katlyn Chookagian vs. Joanne Calderwood, UFC 238
Flyweight contenders Katlyn Chookagian and Joanne Calderwood are also set to match at UFC 238. If there’s an injury to somebody in the main event, it’s possible either of those fighters could be called up to fight for the name.
Chookagian (11-2) is 4-2 overall in the UFC and many recently dropped a split decision to Eye at UFC 231. Calderwood (13-3) is 5-2 in the UFC and is coming from back-to-back wins over Ariane Lipski and Kalindra Faria since going up to flyweight.
Moving up in weight appears like it had been the best decision of Calderwood’s career as she looks rejuvenated in her fresh weight class. Chookagian is a decent fighter, but she lacks the finishing capability that Calderwood has. The betting line should be rather close, but I’d favor Calderwood here.
Tatiana Suarez vs. Nina Ansaroff, UFC 238
Top women’s strawweight contenders Tatiana Suarez and Nina Ansaroff will square off at UFC 238 with a possible title shot on the line.
Suarez (7-0) won The Ultimate Fighter 23 and is a perfect 4-0 at the UFC including a massive TKO win over Carla Esparza in her final outing that announced herself as a legitimate title contender at 115lbs. Ansaroff (10-5) is 4-2 in the UFC and is now riding a four-fight win streak using a breakthrough decision win over Claudia Gadelha in her last fight.
This is a huge matchup between two of the hottest strawweights around Earth, and the winner should be next in line to fight the victory of UFC 237’s Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade. Though I love what Ansaroff has been doing recently, you simply need to go with the upside and accept Suarez in this fight. Like she always appears like, I expect Suarez to be a large favorite to win this fight.

UFC PHILADELPHIA ADDS KEVIN HOLLAND VS. GERALD MEERSCHAERT

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The UFC is headed back into the City of Brotherly Love later this month, and a couple fights are inserted on short notice. UFC on ESPN 2 happens March 30 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with my first thoughts on those new bouts are below.
Kevin Holland vs. Gerald Meerschaert, UFC on ESPN 2 Middleweights Kevin Holland Gerald Meerschaert are set to battle at UFC on ESPN two in what ought to be an enjoyable battle for the fans. The Philly Voice broke news. Holland (13-4) fell a choice to Thiago Santos in his UFC debut but rebounded nicely with a submission win over John Phillips. Overall, he has won five of the last six fights. Meerschaert (28-10) is 4-2 at the UFC but is coming from a entry loss to Jack Hermansson. Both Holland and Meerschaert are very underrated and exciting fighters in middleweight, but given Holland’s childhood and physical benefits in this particular fight, I’d make him the favorite here.
Ray Borg vs. Kyler Phillips, UFC on ESPN two Due to an accident to Pingyuan Liu, Ray Borg now meets short-notice replacement opponent Kyler Phillips in a bantamweight bout. Borg (11-3) is 5-3 overall in the UFC but has not fought as a submission reduction to Demetrious Johnson in October 2017. He has dealt with a lot in his young career and he could put the past behind him. Phillips (6-1) is making his UFC debut after picking up a head kick KO in LFA only a few weeks ago. He’s a veteran of the Contender Series and seems like a very promising prospect, but he lacks the UFC experience that Borg has. I believe Phillips has a opportunity to win this fight, however you still have to favor Borg.
Alex Perez vs. Mark de la Rosa, UFC on ESPN two Moving up from flyweight into bantamweight is Alex Perez, and he’ll take on Mark de la Rosa. Perez (21-5) won his first three UFC battles before getting knocked out by Joseph Benavidez in his final outing. Prior to this, he was riding an eight-fight win series. De la Rosa (11-1) is 2-1 in the UFC and his spouse Montana de la Rosa is having a lot of success from the Octagon, but the fact he struggled at a narrow split decision win over Joby Sanchez was bothering. Like many bantamweight bouts, this should be competitive, but I would still prefer Perez to receive his hand raised.
John Makdessi vs. Jesus Pinedo, UFC Fight Night 148
Because of accidents Chris Gruetzemacher and Nasrat Haqparast, their first rivals John Makdessi and Jesus Pinedo will fight at UFC Fight Night 148, taking place March 23 in Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Considering both men are lightweights who just lost their opponents, this was the way to maintain both men on the card. Makdessi (16-6) is 9-6 in the UFC and is coming off of back-to-back wins over Ross Pearson and Abel Trujillo. Pinedo (16-4-1) is really on a seven-fight win series and conquer Devin Powell by decision in his UFC debut. Makdessi has a ton of experience from the Octagon but Pinedo is just 22-years-old and seems like a great prospect. I’d anticipate a close lineup here but awarded Pinedo’s childhood and upside down he’s probably the play in this one.

UFC 236 GETS NEW FIGHTS INCLUDING RETURN OF ALAN JOUBAN

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The Octagon is headed back for UFC 236 to Atlanta, Georgia. The card takes place April 13 at State Farm Arena, and a number of the newest bouts added to the card are given below.
Alan Jouban vs. Dwight Grant, UFC 236
Welterweights Alan Jouban and Dwight Grant will meet at UFC 236. Zack Klein of all ABC broke the news. Jouban (16-6) is 7-4 in the UFC and many recently defeated Ben Saunders via KO in a 2018″Battle of the Year” candidate. Grant (9-2) showed some Octagon jitters in his UFC debut when he dropped a split decision to Zak Ottow, but he bounced back nicely with a TKO win over Carlo Pedersoli Jr. in his last struggle. Jouban has more expertise and on paper would be the better fighter, but he is also 37 and has not fought in over a year. This may be the right time to fade him and go with Grant, who I’m hoping to be the underdog in this one.
Jalin Turner vs. Matt Frevola, UFC 236
A lightweight matchup between Jalin Turner and Matt Frevola can also be set for UFC 236. Turner (8-4) was brutally knocked out by Vicente Luque in his UFC debut but bounced back nicely with a TKO win over Callan Potter his last time out. Only 23, he looks like a very solid potential at 155lbs. Frevola (6-1-1) was pumped out by Marco Polo Reyes in his UFC debut and then fought to an exciting draw contrary Lando Vannata his out time. Frevola is a whole lot better of a fighter than most give him credit for, but given how impressive Turner appeared in his UFC sophomore attempt, you have to go together to win this battle as a major favorite.
Max Griffin vs. Zelim Imadaev, UFC 236 Occurring at UFC 236 is a welterweight bout between Max Griffin and Zelim Imadaev. ESPN broke the news. Griffin (14-6) includes a mediocre record of 2-4 in the Octagon, but believed he should’ve a split decision nod over Thiago Alves in his final struggle. His record is deceiving as he has fought some really hard competition in his losses, such as former interim champ Colby Covington. Imadaev (8-0) has knocked out all of his opponents to date on the Russian regional circuit but not one of them were notable fighters. Griffin is the biggest fight of Imadaev’s career up to now, and while Griffin is a solid fighter, Imadaev is a tremendous prospect with a glistening record and will probably be favored here.
Curtis Millender vs. Belal Muhammad, UFC 236
Only a week after being submitted by Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, Curtis Millender has signed a contract to fight fellow welterweight Belal Muhammad in UFC 236. The information broke. Millender (17-4) saw a nine-fight win streak snapped by his entry loss to dos Santos but prior to this had won his first three fights from the Octagon. Muhammad (14-3) is 5-3 in the UFC and most recently saw his four-fight win streak snapped by a decision loss to Geoff Neal. Fantastic battle here between two lasting fighters willing to stand and trade for the fans, but despite Millender’s recent quick loss I would still favor him to win this bout as he’s the dynamic fighter and stronger striker.

FIRST BOUTS REVEALED FOR UFC ROCHESTER AND UFC SOUTH CAROLINA

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The very first couple bouts have been shown for the UFC’s upcoming cards from Rochester and Greensboro, and I’ll give my initial takes on those matchups below.
Aspen Ladd vs. Sijara Eubanks, UFC Fight Night 151
Moving up from the women’s flyweight division is Sijara Eubanks, and she’ll fight Aspen Ladd at UFC Fight Night 151, taking place May 18 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York. MMAjunkie broke the news. Ladd (7-0) is undefeated in her career and is 2-0 in the UFC with a vicious TKO win over Tonya Evinger in her final outing. Eubanks (4-2) is 2-0 in the UFC and conquer Roxanne Modafferi by decision in her final fight. This is actually a rematch of the pair’s past bout in Invicta, which Ladd won by decision. I am expecting another competitive struggle this moment round, but once again I would need to favor Ladd to win the fight.
Trevin Giles vs. Zak Cummings, UFC Fight Night 151
Also added to UFC Fight Night 151 is a middleweight bout between Trevin Giles and Zak Cummings. Giles (11-0) is 2-0 in the UFC but has not fought as a KO win over Antonio Braga Neto in December 2017. Cummings (22-6) is 7-3 in the UFC and is coming off of a split decision win over Trevor Smith. Cummings is just a gatekeeper at this point of his career while Giles is a leading prospect at 185lbs, and he’ll probably be a massive favorite here despite his lengthy layoff.
Mike Trizano vs. Grant Dawson, UFC Fight Night 151
Featherweight prospects Mike Trizano and Grant Dawson will fulfill UFC Fight Night 151. The Democrat and Chronicle broke the news. Trizano (8-0) won TUF 27 and is so far 2-0 in the UFC including an upset win over Luis Pena his last time out. Dawson (13-1) won a decision over Julian Erosa in his UFC debut and is riding a four-fight win streak at the moment. Both guys are strong prospects but Dawson appears to get more respect in the window and that I expect him to be preferred at open.
Pat Cummins vs. Ed Herman, UFC Fight Night 151
Light heavyweights Pat Cummins and Ed Herman are set to meet UFC Fight Night 151. Cummins (10-6) is 6-6 from the UFC and is coming from two straight losses to Misha Cirkunov and Corey Anderson. Herman (23-14, 1 NC) is one of the longest tenured UFC fighters and contains an all-time listing of 10-11, 1 NC complete in the Octagon. However, he’s fallen on hard times as of late with a three-fight losing skid including declines to Gian Villante, CB Dollaway and Nikita Krylov. Now you need to fade Herman against anyone, and Cummins should be a small favorite here.
Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Allen Crowder, UFC Fight Night 153
Heavyweights Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Allen Crowder are set to match UFC Fight Night 153, occurring June 22 at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina. Crowder’s team declared the bout. Rozenstruik (7-0) picked up a fantastic knockout win over Junior Albini in his UFC debut. Crowder (10-3, 1 NC) is currently 1-1 in the UFC and is coming from a DQ win over Greg Hardy. This looks like the UFC penalizing Crowder for whatever reason as I fully expect Rozenstruik to get a knockout win.

DONALD CERRONE VS. AL IAQUINTA HEADLINES UFC OTTAWA

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

The UFC’s most recent excursion to The Great White North finally has its own primary event. UFC Fight Night 150 takes place Saturday, May 4 in Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, along with my initial reactions to the headliner are under.
Donald Cerrone vs. Al Iaquinta, UFC Fight Night 150
Lightweight contenders Donald Cerrone and Al Iaquinta will meet in the five-round main event of UFC Fight Night 150, according to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. The UFC has not made this struggle official yet, but Helwani reports that verbal agreements are in place the contracts are just waiting to be signed.
We’ve been waiting for a few months now to see exactly what the main event of UFC Ottawa is. In the beginning, it had been supposed to be a middleweight bout between Elias Theodorou and Derek Brunson that was widely panned by both fans and press as a mediocre principal event. On the contrary, it seems that bout will be the co-main event, for this fan-friendly fight between Cerrone and Iaquinta headlining instead.
Both Cerrone and Iaquinta was calling for a superfight against Conor McGregor, but with McGregor recently running into some legal issues and not prepared to return to the Octagon, the UFC chose to proceed and book Cerrone and Iaquinta against one another instead. It’s a wonderful battle on newspaper between two of the top lightweights in the world, and the lovers in Ottawa need to be quite happy right now about this being the main event of their Fight Night card.
Cerrone (35-11, 1 NC) is 22-8 complete in the UFC with expertise combating both lightweight and welterweight. He is currently riding a two-fight win series that includes back-to-back finishes over Mike Perry at 170lbs and Alexander Hernandez at 155lbs in his last two outings. After going to a three-fight losing skid in 2017, Cerrone has rebounded powerful in 2018 and 2019 with a 3-1 record ever since then. He is one of the most complete fighters in the UFC lightweight branch and despite being 35-years-old looks like he is maybe the best version of himself he has ever been.
Iaquinta (14-4-1) is 9-3-1 in the UFC and is coming off of a huge upset decision win over Kevin Lee in his final fight. He’s actually won six of his last seven fights complete with his lone loss during that stretch coming into UFC lightweight winner Khabib Nurmagomedov. That win series also includes a decision win over Jorge Masvidal that appears even better today that Masvidal only knocked out Darren Till at UFC London. At age 31, Iaquinta is at the prime of his career right now.
It will be interesting to see what the opening line is for this bout, but when I had to guess I would say Iaquinta could be slightly preferred. Cerrone, despite getting an wonderful album within the UFC, was the underdog against Perry and Hernandez and typically does not get as much respect as he deserves. Iaquinta was the puppy against Lee too, but generally is the preferred in his struggles. So I’d guess it will be a close starting line with a little lean to the younger Iaquinta. Either way, this is going to be a huge bout and kudos to the UFC for getting it reserved.

UFC ANNOUNCES KEVIN LEE VS. RAFAEL DOS ANJOS, LUKE ROCKHOLD VS. JAN BLACHOWICZ

Posted Leave a commentPosted in UFC

Two high profile matchups are declared for upcoming fight cards, and my first thoughts on the two are under.
Kevin Lee vs. Rafael dos Anjos, UFC Fight Night 151
Kevin Lee is performed with lightweight as he’ll move up to welterweight and choose on former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at the main event of UFC Fight Night 151. The event is set for May 18 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, New York.
Lee (17-4) is 10-4 at the UFC with all of his previous bouts occurring in lightweight. After losing a decision to Al Iaquinta in his last departure, Lee hinted he would be moving up a weight class as at age 26 he has grown out of his lightweight framework. Although he will not have the size advantage he did down at 155lbs, with his quality wrestling skills and improved striking Lee should still be a good contender at 170lbs, an the UFC is throwing him to the fire in his divisional introduction against a former title challenger in dos Anjos.
Dos Anjos (28-11) is 17-9 at the UFC and has proven to be both a elite lightweight and welterweight. However, at age 34, he’s finally showing signs of a decrease with consecutive decision losses to Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington. Losing to those fighters on newspaper isn’t a huge deal, but the Usman fight was a blowout and it’s possible all the harm has actually taken it’s toll on him today. Still, I’d give RDA a good opportunity to beat Lee in this battle. With Lee’s popularity and childhood benefit I expect him to be put as a decently-sized favored, making RDA an intriguing puppy play if that’s indeed true.
Luke Rockhold vs. Jan Blachowicz, UFC 239
The very first bout added to UFC 239 is a good man, as former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold will move up to light heavyweight to shoot on Jan Blachowicz. The card takes place July 6 in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. ESPN’s Brett Okamoto broke news of this bout.
Rockhold (16-4) is 6-3 overall from the UFC, with all his past spells coming at middleweight. He has not competed since a KO loss to Yoel Romero in UFC 221 in February 2018, along with his final success was a TKO win over David Branch in September 2017. Despite the long layoff, Rockhold remains an extremely intriguing addition to the UFC light heavyweight division. It was not that long ago when Rockhold was the best middleweight on the planet when he won five straight fights by ending in the UFC over Michael Bisping, Chris Weidman, Lyoto Machida, Costa Philippou and Tim Boetsch. His shocking KO loss to Bisping from the pair’s rematch in June 2016 will return among the game’s biggest all-time upsets and Rockhold has struggled since then. On the other hand, the thought procedure is that his chin ought to be sturdier moving up a weight class, although that remains to be seen.
Blachowicz (23-8) is 6-5 in the UFC and and was recently knocked out by Thiago Santos at an expected light heavyweight title eliminator. Prior to this, Blachowicz had won four consecutive struggles by stoppage and was looking like a title contender. The loss to Santos reveals his true place in the division, as a luxury gatekeeper who isn’t quite prepared to fight for the belt. That’s why this is good matchmaking by the UFC. Blachowicz is highly ranked yet beatable, so there’s a fantastic opportunity Rockhold defeats him takes his spot in the top-five, which makes him an immediate competitor for UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones if this happens. Start looking for Rockhold for a solid favorite heading into this particular bout.
